Voice activated teleprompter
A voice activated teleprompter listens as you read and scrolls the script to match your voice. It moves on when you speak, waits when you pause, and catches up if you skip a line, so you never rush to keep up with the text or wait for it.
How voice tracking works
- Speech recognition turns what you say into words, a fraction of a second after you say them.
- Matching compares those words with your script to find your place. It allows for small recognition mistakes ("there" for "their") and ignores words that aren't in the script.
- Scrolling keeps the line you're reading at a fixed height on the screen, close to the camera, and highlights the current word.
The hard part is not the recognition but the matching. Common words like "the" and "and" appear everywhere in a script, so a careless tracker jumps ahead every time you say one. Ours needs a short run of matching words before it moves far, and never jumps backwards on its own; you can click any word or use the arrow keys to go back.
Voice tracking or a fixed scroll?
| Voice activated | Fixed speed | |
|---|---|---|
| Pauses and emphasis | Waits for you | Keeps scrolling |
| Ad-libs and questions | Ignores them, then picks up | Text runs away |
| Changing pace | Follows you | You follow it |
| Needs a microphone | Yes | No |
| Best for | Talking to camera, video calls, presentations | Narration, voice-over, steady reads |
What people mean by "AI teleprompter"
- Voice tracking: speech recognition that follows your reading. This is what our free teleprompter does.
- AI script writing: generating a draft script from a prompt. Useful for a first draft, but always rewrite it in your own words, or it will sound read.
- Eye-contact correction: video effects that redirect your gaze toward the camera. They can look unnatural; placing the text close to the lens is more reliable.
How to get the best accuracy
- Use Chrome, Edge or Safari, which have built-in speech recognition.
- Use a decent microphone close to you. A headset or a small USB mic beats a laptop mic across the room.
- Reduce background noise: fans, music and other voices compete with yours.
- Keep the script close to what you say. If you always say "we've" where the script says "we have", edit the script.
- Spell out numbers and symbols the way you say them ("twenty twenty-six", "fifty percent").
On a Mac, over your video calls
SocialAI Prompter for Mac uses the same voice tracking in a see-through, click-through strip under your webcam that stays on top of Zoom, Google Meet and Teams. See the teleprompter for Zoom guide for a free browser setup too.
Frequently asked questions
What is a voice activated teleprompter?
A teleprompter that listens as you read and scrolls the script to match your voice, instead of moving at a fixed speed. If you pause, it waits; if you speed up, it keeps up.
Is there a free voice activated teleprompter?
Yes. The SocialAI online teleprompter has free, unlimited voice tracking in Chrome, Edge and Safari, with no sign-up.
Is a voice activated teleprompter the same as an AI teleprompter?
"AI teleprompter" usually means one of three things: voice tracking (speech recognition that follows your reading), AI script writing, or eye-contact correction in video. Voice tracking is the one that changes how reading on camera feels.
What happens if I go off script?
A good voice tracker ignores words that aren't in the script and picks up again when you return to it. If you skip ahead, it jumps to where you are once it hears a few words in a row from that part.
Does voice tracking work with accents?
Usually, yes. Accuracy depends on the speech recognition engine, your microphone and background noise more than on accent. A clear microphone close to you and a quiet room help most.
Is my voice recorded?
Our free browser teleprompter doesn't record or store your voice. It uses your browser's speech recognition, which in Chrome sends the audio to Google to turn it into text.
